Chapter Fifteen
Dancer tried to concentrate on the movie. He had seen Silence of the Lambs enough times that it didnât require his full attention anyway. Detective Starling didnât need to see Buffalo Bill to be able to put a bullet in him. The sound of the killerâs gun cocking in pitch darkness was enough to tell her to fire. It was now or never. The blast of the gun caused a flutter in Dancerâs belly. The killer was dead, and there was just resolution. His eyes gleamed, knowing the bad guy was dead. No matter how scary the movie, there was satisfaction when the bad guy got it in the end.
The credits were almost over when his front door jarred open. Dancer quickly powered down his tablet and tossed it to the side.
âHey, are you in there?â Tucker slid the door open and entered. âWhy are you sitting in the dark?â
âI was watching a movie. I didnât realize it was dark.â Dancer stood up, wanting to hear what had happened.
Tucker secured the door. âWhat movie?â
He sensed a casualness in Tuckerâs voice. âSilence of the Lambs.â
âI loved Jodie Foster in that movie!â Tucker stepped over the camping stove and into Dancerâs personal space. âIâm sorry about my mum.â He leaned down and kissed Dancer once on his bottom lip and then used his tongue to wipe moisture from his own lips.
The kiss welled up in Dancerâs heart. He didnât dare move, just in case Tucker wanted to kiss him again. âDid you get to see Mattie?â
âI did. She was sad that I wasnât going with them, but I promised Iâd visit. I walked them over to Family Ties. Itâs not far from here. On Tenth. I couldnât go in, but the lady said they have Family Day on Saturdays. Howâre you doing?â
âFine.â He was anything but fine.
Tucker kissed him again. âYou look madder than an old wet hen. Whatâs wrong?â Tucker brushed his hand up and down Dancerâs shoulders. âTalk to me.â
In a matter of days, Dancer had fallen for a guy he barely knew. He didnât know where to begin. âDo you want some light?â Dancer tried to change the subject. He flicked on the lantern and placed it on top of the bins.
Tucker stood still, his eyes following Dancer about the room. âUm⦠Okay, soâ¦â He scratched his head. âItâs obvious youâre not okay. Can I ask⦠Are we okay?â The anguish on his face said more than his words.
âWeâre fine.â Dancer wasnât sure if he was answering Tuckerâs question or convincing himself. Was this all too much?
Tucker walked over to the Milkmanâs chair and sat down.
âSo, you got them settled. Itâs a rehab center, so thatâs a good thing.â Dancer tried again to change the subject.
âMumâs never been in rehab. They even have a program for the kids where Mattie can go to school while my mum is in, like, counseling or rehab during the day. Mattieâs missed so much school.â
Dancer heard the excitement in Tuckerâs voice. He wished he could be as hopeful, but he had observed the failures of drug rehab firsthand.
